Local Verdict
"Unbeatable cobalt-blue blooms. A smaller, tighter mounding variety perfect for banks and borders."
Overview
There are many Ceanothus varieties, but 'Dark Star' is prized for its tiny, crinkled leaves and intense, cobalt-blue flower clusters that cover the plant entirely in spring.
It forms a dense mound about 4-6 feet tall and wide. Like most Ceanothus, it lives fast and dies young, often checking out after 10-15 years, but the display is worth replanting.

Care Cheat Sheet
- 01.
No Summer Water: Strictly no water in summer once established, or it will die of root rot.
- 02.
Deer Resistant: The tiny, rough leaves are generally unpalatable to deer.
- 03.
Don't Prune Hard: Only prune lightly after blooming; cutting into old wood can kill branches.
